Selank: A Synthetic Peptide with Demonstrated Research-based Benefits

Selank is a synthetic peptide, equivalent to the naturally occurring Tuftsin, capable of modifying or regulating one or more immune functions. However, Selank is more stable and has a longer half-life.

Research demonstrates that Selank not only helps people with generalized anxiety disorder, but can:

• lower stress levels
• improve mood
• promote memory retention and learning.

Selank has a sedative effect like benzodiazepines; however, Selank is not habit-forming and does not cause withdrawal or amnesia.

Selank and Chronic Fatigue

The effect on pain and fatigue may be because Selank can slow the breakdown of enkephalins, the body’s natural painkillers. When Selank was tested in rats, results demonstrated that the peptide regulates the expression of genes affecting chemokines, cytokines, and receptors for both that are involved with the body’s inflammatory processes.

Selank has specifically been found to alter the expression of the BcI6 gene that is primarily involved in the development of the immune system. Further testing showed Selank temporarily changes C3, Casp1, Il2rf, and Xcr1 gene expression in the mouse spleen. Selank can shift the balance of the immune system and modulate inflammation by affecting these genes.

Comparison of Selank with Benzodiazepines in Anxiety Disorders

Selank and benzodiazepines have similar effects on anxiety disorders, as seen in a recent study conducted on rats. Selank has a slight advantage over benzodiazepines when tackling high anxiety levels. Still, when used in sequence, the two treatments together appear to have the best results for treating chronic mild stress that is unpredictable.

Memory and Anxiety Changes

It is difficult for the body to store new information and recall memories when experiencing increased anxiety. Anxiety medication can reduce the negative correlation between anxiety and learning/memory; however, Selank appears to boost cognition directly. Selank can restore learning and memory after brain damage has occurred. In one study on rats treated with Selank following brain damage induced by a neurotoxin, rats’ cognitive processes were restored. The restorative effects appear to be related to Selank’s ability to cause inhibition of the catecholamine system in the brain.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects and Depression Treatment with Selank

In patients with depression, Selank can suppress the gene that produces an inflammatory cytokine. When studying molecular genetics, this gene suppression does not appear to take place in healthy individuals and is only observed in patients with depression.
