Description

Kisspeptin is a hormone signaling protein that is produced naturally in humans. The Kisspeptin peptide acts primarily, in the brain to control hormone secretion related to human reproduction. There is a great deal of interest in how kisspeptin influences testosterone levels and sex-related behaviors like drive and motivation.

The peptide affects Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) signaling. GnRH controls the amount of testosterone in your blood by regulating the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

Kisspeptin can raise testosterone levels by activating GnRH signaling to release LH and FSH. While it has no impact on testosterone in women, Kisspeptin dose increases testosterone levels in men. During a study men showed close to a 3-fold increase in testosterone levels within 90 minutes after they were given a derivative of kisspeptin intravenously [1].

A form of Kisspeptin was found to change the regular release of LH in men, by doing this kisspeptin helps to normalize sex hormones. A study where kisspeptin-10 was given to healthy men showed an increase in LH levels and an increase in testosterone levels, however If given at high enough doses, kisspeptin-10 causes a disruption that results in continuous LH release [2].

Kisspeptin production and release is important to energy levels and kisspeptin may regulate energy balance. In a study of mice where the kisspeptin receptor (Kiss1r) was removed showed higher fat tissue and reduced energy. This may be because kisspeptin receptors are found in white and brown fat tissue [3]. As energy levels and reproductive health are closely connected, Kisspeptin plays a role in energy balance. kisspeptin may explain the neurochemical control that leads to energy modulating in reproduction.

Kisspeptin is capable of suppressing spread of melanoma, a malignant form of skin cancer. Kisspeptin may reduce cell bonding and prevent cancer cells from invading other tissues by doing this the peptide reduces cancer cell migration.  In a study, decreased kisspeptin levels were found in a variety of metastatic cancer types such as; breast, bladder, GI, prostate, pancreatic, ovarian, skin, and thyroid cancers [4].

An experiment in 2020 revealed a connection between kisspeptin, melatonin, and cancer prevention, when daylight exposure increased levels of the peptide. In the experiment, mice showed very different levels of melatonin and kisspeptin after exposure to daylight and darkness. The mice exposed to daylight had high kisspeptin levels but low melatonin levels, opposite of the mice kept in the dark. The mice were then injected with melanoma cells and even though the daylight mice had high tumor growth rates and tumor volume there was no metastasis. This study supports melatonin and kisspeptins ability to suppress tumors [6].

Kisspeptin affects areas of the brain responsible for memory consolidation and 3-D space orientation. Research showed that giving these peptides to mice, can reverse learning and navigational impairment that’s seen with alcohol intoxication [7].

Kisspeptins ability to effect reproduction and energy levels, lead to the belief that the peptide may also influence emotion and behavior. A study where kisspeptin was given to 29 healthy heterosexual men, showed enhanced limbic brain activity that increased reward-seeking behavior, increased drive, and improved overall mood[8]. These findings help to confirm the effects of the peptide on mood, motivation, and drive.

Kisspeptin is important in the kidneys health and development. Kisspeptin and its receptor are found in several locations throughout the kidney and play a role in kidney function signaling. Research in mice reveals that the peptide is important to the growth of nerves and blood vessels in the kidney.[9]

Kisspeptin’s role in the kidney is not fully understood, but it appears that the protein controls how blood vessels grow and respond to injuries. Research in mice suggests that kisspeptin may help control how blood vessels work in certain areas of the body, like the heart. [10] Kisspeptins has also been shown to reduce tumor metastasis this may be because of the effects on the kidney and blood vessels.
