What is SS-31?
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide — a chain of 4 amino acids with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, composed of D-arginine, 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine, lysine, and phenylalanine with an amidated C-terminus. It is designed to selectively bind cardiolipin, a phospholipid on the inner mitochondrial membrane (ref. 1). It is produced synthetically for laboratory use.

The active ingredient in SS-31 (elamipretide) received FDA accelerated approval in 2025 under the brand name Forzinity, solely to improve muscle strength in Barth syndrome patients weighing 30kg or more. This unformulated bulk peptide is not that FDA-approved product, is not a dietary supplement, drug, or food, and is not lawful to market for any other human use.
Elamipretide’s status is unsettled following its 2025 FDA approval. Sources differ on whether it remains subject to the S0 (Non-Approved Substances) catch-all or falls under a separate category; athletes and researchers should confirm current status directly with WADA or a national anti-doping organization.
